Oil Care

ENVIRONMENT AGENCY

Emergency Hotline 0800 80 70 60

Oils and fuels are the most common cause of water pollution incidents. Oil contamination may harm plants and wildlife, make soil infertile and ruin habitats. Every year there are so many oil pollution incidents, which could have been avoided by proper maintenance and good practice. Spilt oil costs you money and could leave you open to prosecution.

Preventing oil pollution
  • Reduce risk by placing fuel tanks away from drains, streams and ponds wherever possible.

  •  Ensure your tank complies to current regulations.

  • If your tank is close to a drain, stream or pond, consider a protective bund for your tank.

  • When purchasing new tanks, ensure that the manufacturers installation instructions are followed.

  • Ensure installation of new tank is undertaken by qualified contractors.

  • Make sure that your oil tank carries an 'Oil Care' sticker and is clearly labeled with the tanks safe capacity and fuel type.

  • Inspect your tank regularly for corrosion and to ensure that all pipe work is properly installed, undamaged and free of leaks.

  • Ensure that your boiler is regularly serviced by an OFTEC registered engineer, they will also inspect your fuel storage facilities.

  • Be alert to leakage problems by watching your oil usage. Even a minor leak can, over time, add up to a large loss of fuel.

  • Carefully check your current fuel stock before re-ordering oil. Do not overfill your tank.

  • When practical supervise oil deliveries.

If A Spill Occurs

Remember most drains empty directly into the river system. If you have an oil spill, stop the flow at source and use an absorbing material such as sand or earth to contain the oil and prevent it entering drains or waterways. Never use detergents or a hose to wash spilt oil away.
