Background |
| Anyone involved in the
domestic kerosene market will be aware of the problem where oil vaporising
appliances such as Agas ‘carbon up’ – or to be more accurate carbon up more
quickly than might be expected, since Aga themselves recommend servicing of their cookers at least every six months. |

Exactly what happens? |

The oil in the fuel feed pipe is effectively cooked by the burner (oxidises),
so there is fall-out and build-up of carbon (gum formation)
that eventually chokes the fuel supply. This problem has become more prevalent
recently when the char value of some kerosene’s has been found to be towards
the upper limit.
Aga themselves recommend
using regular 28sec Class C2 kerosene with a char value in the region of 6-8,
but this cannot be guaranteed by distributors where the char value now is
typically 8-20. |

Some distributors decided
the best way to overcome this problem is to supply premium (blue)
kerosene/paraffin to customers prepared to pay extra for a guaranteed char
typically in the 4-6 range; however, now there’s an alternative, ICI
Topanol Formula.
ICI Topanol is an anti-oxidant additive widely sold
by ICI throughout the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Sold primarily into the aviation markets both military and civil,
it is used to maintain the essential quality of jet kerosene to within its
manufacturer’s performance specification. |

Pricing Structure |
| Retail price per bottle is £15.99 + VAT @ 17.5% equating to a
kerosene dosage cost of less than 2 p.p.l per 1000 litres.
